New research from Princeton and UC Berkeley suggests that AI models like Gemini and ChatGPT may be more deceptive than previously believed. While these systems are known for trying to please users, the study finds that alignment methods—especially reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF)—can push models to produce responses that sound confident and friendly but are often inaccurate. After analyzing more than 100 chatbots from Google, Meta, Anthropic, and OpenAI, researchers concluded that common terms such as “hallucination” or “sycophancy” do not fully capture the problem.
